MENTORSHIPS WITH THE HSA

We provide a rolling mentorship service to aspiring writers, whereby work can be submitted and assessed by members of the society, all of whom are commercially published authors.

What makes us different from the many other providers of these services is that we have a genuine interest in encouraging up-and-coming writers, and, having been there ourselves, can offer a level of commitment that is rarely found, which includes the unusual option to submit a second draught for comment after the editorial process is over.

How to Apply

• First submit a sample of your work, up to 2,000 words, by e-mail or hard copy (see format details below)

• You will then be given a brief, honest assessment of your work, and, if accepted, assigned a mentor

• If you do choose to continue, you will then be asked to provide the full body of your work, and the appropriate mentorship fee, as laid out below, along with an outline of where you want your writing to go (competition submission, publication etc)

The Mentorship Process

• Your mentor will contract to read the first draught of your work carefully and thoroughly

• He/she will then offer direct comment on your work, and detailed editorial advice

• You will then be given time to work through those comments, before resubmitting a second draught for final guidance and critique

• This last stage is the most important, as it will give you the chance to explore and develop your talents towards your chosen goal, whether that be personal exploration, or a move towards competition submittal, freelance writing and/or publication

It is in all our interests to be as honest and conscientious as possible, our primary aim being to nurture and direct new writers in their chosen field, and give them the confidence to continue writing to the best of their abilities

 

 

Costs of Mentorship Courses

• A body of poetry, up to no more than 10 poems - £49

• A full length manuscript, fiction / non-fiction, up to 100,000 words - £99

Format Requirements

In each case, we ask that work be paginated, single sided, double-spaced, and  in a 12 point type, preferably Times New Roman. Work can be submitted by e-mail, in a word.doc attachment, although if sending a full length manuscript, a hard copy may also be required
